United Airlines in merger talks with US Airways

United Airlines and US Airways have once again renewed their on-off merger talks to create the second-largest carrier in the US even as they look to consolidate post a global recession that badly affected leisure and business travel worldwide.
Both carriers are said to be in advanced stage of merger talks but were yet to arrive at a deal, according to a New York Times report yesterday.
This marks the third time in a decade that both carriers will have tried to make a deal.
With a market value of $3.17 billion, United is the third-largest carrier in the US by traffic, while US Airways has a market value of $1.1 billion and is the sixth-largest carrier by traffic.
United, with 360 planes in its fleet has its operation hubs in San Francisco, Denver, Chicago and Washington, and with 46,000 employees operates about 3,300 flights a day.
US Airways, with a fleet of 347 aircraft, has hubs at Philadelphia, Phoenix and Charlotte and operates about 3,100 flights a day with 34,000 workers.
