Air India pilots call off strike after HC order
16 Mar 2011
Following a Delhi high court diktat and a day-long conciliatory proceeding in the labour commission, a section of Air India pilots who were threatening to go on strike from today called off their action late on Tuesday evening.
''Normal operations will continue on Wednesday,'' an Air India spokesperson said, citing the court order.
The strike was called by the Indian Commercial Pilots Association (ICPA), which comprises pilots of the erstwhile Indian Airlines. Their main demand was pay parity with pilots of Air India, with which IA was merged a couple of years back.
The protesting pilots accepted the management's offer of providing an interim relief package and addressing pay parity concerns to the ministry by 31 March.
Earlier in the day, justice Gita Mittal of the Delhi high court directed the ICPA to adhere to its statements made before the court that it would will not take a coercive step till the conciliation proceedings headed by the chief labour commissioner were concluded.
A senior Air India official said the pilots union has agreed to accept the court's order and will have to reply to it in four weeks.
