The Indian Army on Sunday successfully test-fired the BrahMos stealth supersonic cruise missile, at Pokhran in the western sector, providing itself with much-needed swift strike capability along the border with Pakistan.
BrahMos, with a range of 290 km, can fly as low as 10 metres to attack surface targets above the ground and can reach a speed of Mach 2.8 or nearly three times the speed of sound.
"In conformity and pursuit of operational and strategic surface to surface missile capability development, the second BrahMos unit of Army has been operationalised somewhere in western sector," an Army spokesperson said in a release.
"The Indian Army unit successfully launched BrahMos missile and destroyed the preselected target in the field firing ranges in Rajasthan on Sunday," he added.
Army vice chief Lt Gen Shri Krishna Singh was present during the test-firing of BrahMos, which is the world's fastest cruise missile in operation.
BrahMos, which can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft or land, has already been inducted into the Indian Navy and the Indian Army.
BrahMos is a joint production of India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Federal State Unitary Enterprise NPO Mashinostroyenia (NPOM) of Russia.
The missile is named after two rivers, the Brahmaputra and the Moskva.
