Rosoboronexport to showcase air defence missile and radar systems at Defexpo 2008
16 Feb 2008
Russia is showcasing many of its air defence and radar intelligence systems at the Defexpo India 2008, which opens for public viewing and interactions today.
According to Russian state-controlled arms export monopoly Rosoboronexport, visitors to the exposition will get to see the S-300PMU2 Favorit mobile multi-channel long-range air defence missile system. Company officials said that the system is considerably better than its closest foreign equivalent, the US-made Patriot PAC-3 (Patriot Advanced Capability-3) system.
The S-300PMU2, Favorit, (Nato codename: SA-20 Gargoyle) is a long range, surface-to-air missile (SAM) system designed to engage aircraft, cruise missiles and theatre ballistic missiles in intense clutter and jamming environments. Reportedly it can engage up to 36 targets simultaneously while providing guidance for up to 72 missiles (2 missiles per target ensuring target kill).
Its highly automated detection and acquisition systems provide outstanding performance over previous SAM systems.
The S-300PMU2 is an upgraded version of S-300PMU1 SAM system.
The Russian stand will also provide information about the medium and short range air defence systems Buk-M1-2, Buk-M2E and Tor-M1, the formidable Tunguska-M1 gun/missile system for low-level air defence, and the Igla air defence missile systems.
Russian specialists will also inform visitors about the programmes to modernise the Zu-23, Pechora, Osa-AKM and Strela-10M air defence systems, officials said.
The Russian stand will also provide experts insight into the technical characteristics of Mil and Kamov helicopters, including the Mi-35 Hind, Mi-35P and Mi-35M attack transport helicopters, the Mi-17-1B Hip attack transport helicopter, the Mi-28NE Night Hunter attack helicopter, the Ka-29 Helix-B deck-based helicopter, and the Ka-31 radar picket naval helicopter fitted with the E-801M Oko (Eye) airborne electronic warfare radar.
