Norfolk, USA: A new Indian Navy ship, the INS Jalashwa, the first of its class for the Indian Navy, will be commissioned on Friday at US Naval Station, Norfolk.

The INS Jalashwa was formerly the USS Trenton, an amphibious transport dock ship.

The Trenton was decommissioned in January and transferred to the Indian Navy, marking the first time the US has transferred a ship to India.

The USS Trenton retired from the US Navy in January this year after 30 years of service.

Indian ambassador to the United States, Ronan Sen, will commission the ship.

Indian naval crew arrived in the US in October last year, and has been training with American crew, both in Norfolk, and twice on at-sea training periods.
