New taxiways to boost runway capacity at Mumbai airport
13 Apr 2007
MIAL officials said that while one of the two taxiways, 'A4', is a parallel taxiway, the other one, 'W', is a rapid exit taxiway. 'W' is in addition to the other rapid exit taxiway, 'India', which was inaugurated last November.
Rapid exit taxiway 'W' is located about 1,700 metres from the threshold of the main runway 09/27, while taxiway 'India', is located 2,200 metres from the threshold. Both the taxiways will allow aircraft to exit the runway quicker than before, reducing runway occupancy time during landings and take-offs.
About 240 metres in length, taxiway 'A4' has been built as a bridge over the Mithi River and will join one end of the main runway to the other. This was a gap that was previously not covered. The taxiway runs parallel to runway 09/27.
