Qantas opts for GEnx engines for its Boeing 787 fleet

Sydney: Qantas Airways Ltd said it has selected the General Electric (GE) GEnx engine to power its new Boeing 787 fleet of up to 115 aircraft. This follows an eight-month long evaluation process, according to Qantas officials.
According to Qantas chief financial officer, Peter Gregg, the initial order for 45 aircraft engines was for a value of A$2bn in capital and maintenance costs over the life of the engines. He also said that the GEnx was chosen because of its superior performance and environmental impact.
The GEnx is 20 pct more fuel-efficient than the engines used in Qantas current fleet of Boeing 767 aircraft and have less environmental impact.
