22 Aug 2008
The only awards to recognise the work of freelance cameramen and camerawomen in TV newsgathering, The Rory Peck Award, honours their skill, initiative and, above all, their courage.
Rory Peck was one of the most skilful and respected freelance cameramen of his generation. A fearless and individual operator, Rory captured some of the most enduring images of the late twentieth century.
In October 1993, he was killed in cross fire while covering the October coup outside Moscow's television centre, Ostankino.
The Rory Peck Awards benefit from a joint effort of the international newsgathering industry and are supported by Al Jazeera English, AP Television News, BBC News, Autoscript Ltd, BSkyB, CBC, CNN, Channel 4 TV, Film &TV Services, GlobeCast, ITN, ITV News, NBC News, Neon Broadcast Services, Reuters TV and SKY News.
Instituted by the The Rory Peck Trust, the awards function is the main fund-raiser for the charity to support freelance newsgatherers and their families worldwide in times of need and promotes their welfare and safety.
