VVIP chopper scam: CBI charges former IAF chief SP Tyagi, nine others

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today filed charges against former IAF chief Air Chief Marshal SP Tyagi and nine others in the AgustaWestland VVIP chopper case.
CBI has prepared a 30,000-page chargesheet against the former IAF chief and the other nine accused.
The case filed before Special CBI Judge Arvind Kumar also names Tyagi's cousin Sanjeev alias Julie along with advocate Gautam Khaitan in the Rs450-crore bribery in connection with the Rs3,600 crore chopper deal.
According to the CBI, Khaitan was the "brain" that channeled the bribe money to several firms and individuals in India while Sanjeev was close to alleged European middleman Carlo Gerosa, says a PTI report.
The 71-year old Tyagi, who retired from the IAF in 2007, his cousin Sanjeev and Khaitan were arrested on 9 December by the agency in connection with the case. They were let on bail.
The government had, on 1 January 2014, scrapped the contract with AgustaWestland for supplying the VVIP choppers to IAF over alleged breach of contractual obligations.
The Patiala House court in Delhi had in December last year granted bail to Tyagi and two others in the Rs3,600-crore AgustaWestland VVIP chopper deal case.
The court granted bail to Tyagi, 71, on a surety of Rs2 lakh. He has been directed not to leave Delhi and the National Capital Region or tamper with evidence in the high-profile case.
