Fresh Chinese aggression in Ladakh ahead of President Li’s visit

Despite apparent bonhomie, border tensions between India and China continue. Just a day after reports that Chinese troops had intruded 500 metres into Indian territory in the Demchok area of Ladakh and put up encampments, another face-off was reported today between the soldiers of the two countries.

Today's incident has been reported from the Chumur area of Ladakh, where around 300 Chinese troops have surrounded some 100 Indian soldiers and are not letting them move.

The incident comes mere days ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to India.

On the Demchok incident on Sunday, reports said around 30 Chinese soldiers had intruded 500 metres into the area and have been camping there since 11 September.

A mere 70 personnel of the home ministry-controlled ITBP (Indo-Tibetan Border Police) have been deployed in the area in what seems a belated and inadequate reaction.

Last month, Chinese troops had entered almost 25 kilometres into Indian territory in the Burtse area of Ladakh (See: Chinese troops enter 25 km into Indian territory in Ladakh).

In 2014 alone, 334 incidents of Chinese armed intrusion into Indian territory have been reported.
