Bharat Forge bids lowest in Indian Army’s Rs6,000-cr tender for ATAGS howitzers

Bharat Forge has emerged as lowest bidder in Indian Army's Rs6,000-crore tender to develop and manufacture 307 ATAGS howitzers, to be deployed along the borders with China and Pakistan.
Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) will partner Bharat Forge and the second-lowest bidder Tata Advanced Systems for the production of these howitzers.
Pune-based Bharat Forge will produce 60 per cent and Tata Advanced Systems the remaining 40 per cent of the 307 howitzers.
The Army's proposal, now awaiting clearance from the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) for the acquisition of the ATAGS howitzers, an artillery weapon that can fire shells at medium to high trajectories and can be easily transported.
The Army has carried out user trials of the guns at different terrains and has suggested changes to suit various altitudes. DRDO has also upgraded the weapon based on feedback from users.
Trials of the 155mm/52-calibre ATAGS howitzers were completed at the Pokhran Field Firing Range and DRDO has shared the technology with and Tata Advanced Systems.
