Government announces big hike in support prices of kharif crops

The government today announced substantial increases in the minimum support prices of khaiff pulses, cereals and oilseeds for the 2012-13 season, in a bid to prevent any decline in agricultural production.
The cabinet committee on economic affairs (CCEA) today fixed the minimum support prices (MSP) for paddy (common) and paddy (Grade A) at Rs1,250 and Rs1,280, respectively, for kharif crops of 2012-13 season.
This represents an increase of Rs170 per quintal over last year's MSPs.
The MSPs of jowar (hybrid) and ragi have been raised to Rs1,500 per quintal, providing an increase of Rs520 and Rs450 per quintal, respectively.
The MSPs of bajra and maize have been raised by Rs195 each per quintal and fixed at Rs1,175 per quintal.
The MSP for Jowar (Maldandi) has also been raised by Rs520 per quintal over the last year's MSP and fixed at Rs1,520 per quintal.
