Government hikes support prices for pulses, cereals

The government has announced major hikes in the minimum support prices (MSPs) of pulses and cereals for the 2010-11 kharif season.
Accordingly, the MSP of arhar (tur) has been fixed at Rs3,000 per quintal (up Rs700), of moong at Rs3,170 per quintal (up Rs410) and of urad at Rs2,900 per quintal (up Rs380), respectively, over the last year's MSPs.
In addition, the government will provide an additional incentive at the rate of Rs5 per kg for tur, urad and moong sold during the harvest/arrival period of two months to procurement agencies.
The MSPs of groundnut-in-shell, sunflower seed and niger seed have been increased by Rs200 per quintal, Rs135 per quintal and Rs45 per quintal, respectively, to Rs2,300 per quintal, Rs2,350 per quintal and Rs2,450 per quintal, respectively.
The MSPs of soyabean (black), soyabean (yellow) and sesamum have been increased by Rs50 each and fixed at Rs1,400 per quintal, Rs1,440 per quintal and Rs2,900 per quintal, respectively.
MSP of cotton remains unchanged at Rs2,500 per quintal for staple length (mm) of 24.5 to 25.5 and micronaire value of 4.3 to 5.1 and Rs3,000 per quintal for staple length (mm) of 29.5 - 30.5 and micronaire value of 3.5 to 4.3.
