India’s foodgrain production seen exceeding 270 million tonnes in 2016-17

The government expects a record foodgrain production of 270.10 million tonnes during 2016-17 in view of a good monsoon, union minister for agriculture and farmers' welfare Radha Mohan Singh said on Wednesday.
The minster observed that this is an ambitious target for food grains production adding that he has given approval for the target production of different corps for the year 2016-17.
Of this, wheat production would be 96.50 million tonnes while the combined target all kinds of pulses has been fixed at 20.75 million tonnes and oilseed production is expected to be around 35 million tones.
Sugarcane production is expected to be around 355 million tonnes during the year, the minister stated.
He said that despite two consecutive droughts, production of foodgrains went up in comparison to last year. It is estimated at 252.23 million tonnes of food grains in 2015-16.
