India's khariff rice procurement tops 34 million tonnes

Rice procurement in the country during the kharif marketing season 2010-11 (October-September) has crossed the 34 million tonne mark, with 341,84,740 tonnes procured by the various government agencies till 27 October 2011. Rice procurement in the country stood at 318,83,509 tonnes in the khariff marketing season during the previous fiscal.
Government procurement agencies had reported foodgrain stocks of 61.15 million tones, comprising 25.27 million tonnes of rice and 35.88 million tonnes of wheat during the beginning of August.
The procurement of rice as of 1 August 2011 (KMS 2010-11) was 32.6 million tonnes as against 30.16 million tonnes procured last khariff season.
Wheat procurement for rabi marketing season 2011-12 was 28.14 million tonnes against 22.46 million tonnes procured last season.
Andhra Pradesh topped the list by procuring 96,10,417 tonnes of rice, followed by Punjab (86,34,553 tonnes), Chhatisgarh 37,39,993 tonnes.
Uttar Pradesh and Orissa have also contributed significantly by procuring 25,53,687 tonnes and 24,75,926 tonnes, respectively.
