Monsoon hits south Kerala coast; Delhi, UP too get light showers

The southwest monsoon has struck the southern Kerala coast, heralding a rainy season that may extend to August and keep the country's farm economy ticking.

Although it has been raining for dome days in the southern cost, the monsoon is reported to have officially set in today with the Indian Meteorological Department confirming its arrival.

Isolated light rains also drenched New Delhi and parts of Uttar Pradesh today although the intensity of the heat which continues.

The rains, however, brought down temperatures marginally in Aligarh, Hapur, Allahabad and Agra divisions, which have been reeling under an intense hot spell in the last two weeks.

Temperature was appreciably above normal in Varanasi, Faizabad, Gorakhpur, Lucknow, Meerut, Moradabad and Kanpur divisions, the MeT office here said.

Incessant rainfall for the past two days in the catchment areas of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries has inundated several villages in Upper and Lower Assam, even as eight persons were injured in a thunderstorm in Dhubri district.
