Tamil Nadu to file contempt case in Supreme Court against Karnataka on Cauvery issue
09 Oct 2012
The Tamil Nadu government today decided to file a contempt of court petition in the Supreme Court against the government of Karnataka for violating court orders by stopping supply of Cauvery river waters to Tamil Nadu.
The decision was taken at a meeting held to review the situation, chaired by chief minister J Jayalalithaa.
Minister for public works KV Ramalingam and senior officials also attended the meeting, according to a statement issued by the state government.
Participants at the meeting said the Karnataka government's unilateral decision to stop release of Cauvery waters to Tamil Nadu would affect the federalistic set-up of the country and also amount to contempt of the apex court's directive.
It was also decided to file a contempt of court petition against the Karnataka government in the apex court to ensure that Tamil Nadu received its share of Cauvery waters.
The Supreme Court had, on 29 September, ordered the Karnataka government to release 9,000 cusecs of Cauvery waters as per the decision of the Cauvery River Authority (CRA), presided over by prime minister Manmohan Singh.
