CBI launches raids over NHRM embezzlement
30 Aug 2012
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today conducted raids at various premises in Uttar Pradesh as well as Gujarat in connection with alleged embezzlement of central funds allocated to Uttar Pradesh under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM).
Search operations began on Wednesday evening at six locations in Ghaziabad, Lucknow and Agra in Uttar Pradesh and Vapi in Gujarat in connection with the case. The searches were continuing today at the time of writing.
The CBI action comes after the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court on Wednesday caustically asked the investigating agency whether it wanted to further probe the matter or give up.
A bench of Justices Imtiaz Murtza and A K Singh had asked the investigating agency on why the investigation was so tardy.
The court was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) regarding alleged irregularities in the use of NHRM funds and the murders of two chief medical officers, B P Singh and V K Arya.
The medical officers were murdered after they began inquiring into irregularities in the NRHM.
