Consumer price index for industrial workers rises to 10.45 per cent

The all-India consumer price index (CPI) for industrial workers on a point-to-point basis rose to 10.45 per cent in December 2008 from 9.7 per cent in November 2008.

The all-India consumer price index number for industrial workers (CPI-IW) on base 2001=100 for the month of  December, 2008 decreased by 1 point and stood at 147 points.

During December 2008, the index recorded maximum decrease of 4 points each in Madurai, Monger-Jamalpur and Hyderabad centres, 3 points in 12 centres, 2 points in 21 centres and 1 point in 23 centres.

The index recorded an increase of 2 points each in Guntur and Bokaro centres and 1 point each in Quilon and Mundakkyam centres, while in the remaining 15 centres the index remained stationary.   

The maximum decrease of 4 points in Madurai centre has mainly been due to higher prices of vegetable, rice, groundnut oil, sunflower oil, poultry (chicken), onion, ginger and petrol etc.

In Munger-Jamalpur centre, this decrease has been due to lower prices of rice, vegetable and fruits etc., while in Hyderabad centre it has mainly been due to rice, poultry (chicken), vegetables and petrol.

The increase  of 2 points in Guntur centre has mainly been due to increase in the prices of rice and poultry (chicken) and that in Bokaro centre is due to wheat, wheat atta, goat meat, milk (buffalo), soft coke, bed sheet, medicine (homeopathic), stationery and detergent powder etc.
