Consumer price inflation up at 9.75 per cent in October

Consumer price inflation in the country rose 9.75 per cent year-on-year in October 2012 due to a spurt in the prices of sugar, pulses, vegetables and clothing.
Consumer price inflation based on the all-India (general) consumer price index stood at 9.75 per cent in October 2012, against 9.73 per cent in September 2012, provisional figures released by the Central Statistical Office (CSO) showed.
The all-India consumer price index (all groups) numbers for rural, urban and combined stood at 126.7, 122.6 and 124.9, respectively, in October.
The corresponding provisional inflation rates for rural and urban areas were 9.98 per cent and 9.46 per cent, respectively, in October 2012, against corresponding rates (final) of 9.79 per cent and 9.72 per cent, respectively, in September 2012.
Sugar prices rose the most, recording a 19.61 per cent year-on-year increase in prices in October 2012 compared to its level in October 2011.
Prices of edible oil and fat also increased by 17.92 per cent, while pulses and cereals were costlier by 14.89 per cent.
Vegetable prices were up 10.74 per cent while meat, fish and egg were costlier by 12.18 per cent. Clothing, bedding and footwear prices also rose 10.47 per cent during the month.
Consumer price inflation, however, showed a moderation in urban areas at 9.46 per cent in October, compared with 9.72 per cent in September while in rural areas, inflation rose to 9.98 per cent in October from 9.79 per cent in September.
