Core sector production down 9.6% year-on-year in July

Core sector industrial production in the country declined by 9.6 per cent (provisional) year-on-year in July 2020 compared with a decline of 15 per cent (revised) in the previous month, provisional figures released by the commerce ministry showed.

Production in the eight core sector industries comprising coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertiliser, steel, cement and electricity, which carry nearly 40.27 per cent of the weight of items included in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), registered a cumulative growth of (-) 20.5per cent during April-July 2020-21.
Final core sector production growth for April 2020 has been estimated to be (-) 37.9 per cent based on revised data.
Production of coal, which has a weight of 10.33 per cent in IIP, declined by 5.7 per cent in July 2020 while cumulative coal production declined by 12.9 per cent year-on-year during April-July 2020-21.
Production of crude oil (weight of 8.98 per cent in IIP) declined by 4.9 per cent in July 2020 while cumulative crude production declined by 6.1 per cent during April-July 2020-21.
Production of natural gas (weight of:6.88 per cent in IIP) declined by 10.2 per cent in July 2020 while cumulative production of natural gas declined by 14.7 per cent during April-July 2020-21.
Petroleum refinery production (weight of 28.04 per cent in IIP) declined by 13.9 per cent in July 2020 while cumulative refinery throughput declined by 17.1 per cent during April-July 2020-21.
Fertilizers production (weight of 2.63 per cent in IIP) increased by 6.9 per cent in July 2020 while its cumulative production increased by 3.9 per cent during April-July 2020-21.
Steel production (weight of 17.92 per cent in IIP) declined by 16.4 per cent in July 2020 while cumulative steel production declined by 42.0 per cent during April-July 2020-21.
Cement production (weight of 5.37 per cent) declined by 13.5 per cent in July 2020 while cumulative cement production declined by 32.2per cent during April-July 2020-21.
Electricity generation (weight of 19.85 per cent in IIP) declined by 2.3 per cent in July 2020 while cumulative production of electricity declined by 12.4 per cent during April-July 2020-21.
