Core sector production grows at (-)15% in June

Core sector industrial production in the country declined by 15 per cent (provisional) year-on-year in June 2020 compared with a decline of 22 per cent (revised) in the previous month, provisional figures released by the commerce ministry showed.

Production in the eight core sector industries comprising coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertiliser, steel, cement and electricity, which carry nearly 40.27 per cent of the weight of items included in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), registered a cumulative growth of (-) 24.6 per cent during April-June 2020-21.
Final core sector production growth for March 2020 has been estimated to be (-) 8.6 per cent based on revised data.
Coal production, which gas a weight of 10.33 per cent in the larger index of industrial production (IIP), declined by 15.5 per cent in June 2020 while its cumulative growth declined by 15 per cent during April-June 2020-21.
Crude oil production (weight of 8.98 per cent in IIP) declined by 6.0 per cent in June 2020 while cumulative crude production declined by 6.5 per cent during April-June 2020-21.
Production of natural gas (weight of 6.88 per cent in IIP) declined by 12 per cent in June 2020 while its cumulative production declined by 16.2 per cent during April-June 2020-21.
Petroleum refinery production (weight of 28.04 per cent in IIP) declined by 8.9 per cent in June 2020 while its cumulative production declined by 18.2 per cent during April-June 2020-21.
Fertiliser production (weight of 2.63 per cent in IIP) increased by 4.2 per cent in June 2020 while its cumulative production increased by 2.8 per cent during April-June 2020-21.
Steel production (weight of 17.92 per cent in IIP) declined by 33.8 per cent in June 2020 while its cumulative production declined by 51.7 per cent during April-June 2020-21.
Cement production (weight of 5.37 per cent in IIP) declined by 6.9 per cent in June 2020 while its cumulative producion declined by 38.3 per cent during April-June 2020-21.
Electricity generation (weight of 19.85 per cent in IIP) declined by 11.0 per cent in June 2020 while its cumulative production declined by 16.1 per cent during April-June 2020-21.
