CPI for industrial workers fell to 14.86 per cent in February

The inflation rate based on the all-India consumer price index for industrial workers declined to 14.86 per cent in February 2010 from 16.22 per cent in the previous month (January 2010).

The all-India consumer price index for industrial workers (CPI-IW) having base 2001=100 decreased by 2 points and stood at 170 in February 2010, a commerce ministry release said.

During February 2010, the index recorded a decrease of 5 points each in Sholapur, Ludhiana, Kodarma and Chhindwara centres. The index declined 4 points each in Ranchi, Hatia and Jharia centres, 3 points each in 14 centres, 2 points each in 14 centres and 1 point each in 17 centres.

The index increased by 1 point each in 6 centres, 2 points each in 2 centres, 3 points each in Guwahati, Siliguri and Raniganj centres and 5 points in Labac Silchar centre.

The index remained steady in the remaining 15 centres.

The maximum decrease of 5 points each in Sholapur, Ludhiana, Kodarma and Chhindwara centres has been attributed to a decrease in the prices of rice, wheat, atta, arhar dal, masur dal, groundnut oil, onion, vegetable items, sugar etc. The decrease of 4 points each in Ranchi Hatia and Jharia centres was mainly due to a decrease in the prices of wheat, atta, arhar dal, masur dal, onion, vegetable items, sugar etc.

The increase of 5 points in Labac Silchar centre was mainly due to increase in the prices of rice, fish (fresh and dry), potato, tea leaf, pan leaf, firewood, etc. The increase of 3 points each in Guwahati, Siliguri and Raniganj centres was due to an increase in the prices of rice, atta, mutton, poultry (chicken), milk, pan leaf etc.
