CPI inflation for industrial workers zooms to 16.22 per cent in January

The inflation rate based on the all-India consumer price index for industrial workers (CPI-IW) rose 16.22 per cent in January 2010 compared to the level in January 2008. CPI-IW inflation rate stood at 14.97 per cent in December 2009.

The all-India consumer price index for industrial workers (base 2001=100) increased three points to 172 points in January 2010, official data released on Friday showed.

During January 2010, the index recorded a maximum increase of 11 points in Amritsar centre, 10 points each in Jabalpur and Nagpur centres, 9 points in Ranchi Hatia centre, 8 points each in four centres, 7 points each in another four centres, 6 points in seven centres, 5 points each in another seven centres, 4 points each in four centres, 3 points each in eleven centres, 2 points each in eight centres and 1 point each in eleven centres. The index decreased by 1 point each in four centres and 3 points each in three centers, 3 points each in two centres and 4 points each in three centres, while in the remaining six centres the index remained stationary.

The maximum increase of 11 points in Amritsar centre has been attributed mainly to a high housing index and increase in the prices of milk, sugar, tea leaves, electricity charges etc. The increase of 10 points in the Jabalpur centre has been mainly due to housing index and increase in the prices of rice, milk, sugar etc, in the Nagpur center, it has mainly been on account of housing index and increase in the prices of wheat, goat meat, sugar etc. The increase of 9 points in Ranchi Hatia centre is mainly due to housing index and increase in the prices of  wheat, atta, milk, sugar, tea (readymade) etc. However, the decrease of 4 points each in Tripura, Darjeeling and Raniganj centres has been due to decrease in the prices of vegetable and fruit items.

The indices in respect of the six major centres are as follows: Ahmedabad - 165, Bangalore - 177, Chennai - 160, Delhi - 158, Kolkata - 167, Mumbai - 171.
