Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and System pilot project launched

Union home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde today launched the pilot phase of Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and System (CCTNS) in New Delhi.

The CCTNS has been developed as a comprehensive database for crimes and criminals that would create a nation-wide environment for real-time sharing of crime and criminal information.

The project aims to create a comprehensive and integrated policing and sharing data of crimes and criminals among 14,000 police stations across the country through a nation-wide network of IT-enabled infrastructure that would provide a sophisticated tracking system around 'investigation of crime and detection of criminals'.

According to Shinde, CCTNS would make a quantum improvement in the ability of law enforcement agencies to check crime and apprehend criminals.

The CCTNS project was conceived by the finance minister P Chidambaram during his tenure as home minister in the wake of the Mumbai terror attack.

Under the project, approximately 14,000 police stations throughout the country will be connected apart from higher offices in police hierarchy.

Home secretary R K Singh said the CCTNS would bring more transparency in police administration as a person can lodge complaint on-line and get a status report of the complaint on-line too.

Singh said the CCTNS would help senior police officers to keep a tab on people's complaints and progress of any investigation.
