Government to spend Rs200 crore on 26 new forensic labs

The government has approved the setting up of 26 forensic science laboratories involving an outlay of Rs200 crore under the XIth five-year plan.

Under one of these schemes, the government will set up three new hi-tech central forensic science laboratories (CFSLs) and government examiner of questioned documents (GEQDs) at Bhopal, Pune and Guwahati, minister of state for home Mullappally  Ramachandran informed the Lok Sabha in a written reply.

The government, he said, has also approved a scheme to set up six new regional forensic science laboratories (RFSLs) and 52 new district mobile forensic units (DMFUs) in different states/union territories with an outlay of Rs100 crore under the XIth plan. 

Under the scheme of modernisation of police forces (MPF), the central government provides the funds to state governments for purchase of various security equipments and forensic equipments.

The amount will be used for development of forensic science laboratories through acquisition of various equipments.  

Both these scheme are under implementation stage, the minister added.
