India’s consumer price inflation at a 7-month low of 3.61% in February

Consumer price inflation rate based on all-India Consumer Price Index (CPI) for February 2025 stood at a 7-month low of 3.61 per cent, which is also 65 basis points lower compared to the inflation level in February 2024, provisional figures released on Wednesday showed.
Consumer price inflation rate for rural areas showed a sharp decline in headline to 4.79 per cent in February 2025, against the January level of 4.59 per cent. Inflation rate for the urban areas also declined to 3.32 per cent in February 2025 against 3.87 per cent in January.
Food price inflation, based on the all-India Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI) for February 2025 hit a 9-month low of 3.75 per cent and showed a 2.22 points decline compared to the January level, according to provisional estimates.
Food price inflation rate for rural and urban areas stood at 4.06 per cent and 3.20 per cent, respectively, in February 2025. Food price inflation for rural areas was 6.31 per cent in January while it was 5.53 per cent for urban areas in January.
Inflation rate based on the housing index, compiled for the urban areas, stood at 2.91 per cent in February 2025 agaist the January level of 2.82 per cent.
Inflation rate based on the fuel & light index was down 1.33 per cent in February 2025 against a decline of 1.49 per cent, registered in January. The index is common for both rural and urban areas.
Inflation rate based on the education index, which is also common for both rural and urban areas, stood at 3.88 per cent in February, unchanged from the January level.
Inflation rate based on the combined health index rose to 4.12 per cent in February 2025 from the corresponding level of 3.97 per cent of in January.
Inflation rate based on the combined transport and communication index was also higher at 2.87 per cent in February 2025 against 2.76 per cent in January. Corresponding inflation rate for the month of January 2025 was 2.76 per cent.
The significant decline in inflation level in February 2025 has been due mainly to lower prices of vegetables, egg, meat and fish, pulses and their products and milk and milk products.
Top five items showing highest increase in prices in February 2025 included coconut oil, coconut, gold, silver and onion.
Top five items showing negative inflation in February 2025 included ginger, jeera, tomato, cauliflower and garlic.
