India's consumer price inflation climbs further to 2.92% in April

Consumer price inflation in the country based on the consumer price index increased further to 2.92 per cent in April 2019, climbing further from 2.86 per cent in March, official data released today showed.
The inflation based on Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 4.58 per cent in April 2018.
Data released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) showed that inflation in food basket rose to 1.10 per cent in April 2019 from 0.30 per cent in March.
While the consumer price inflation rate has been ruling well below the Reserve Bank of India’s medium-term inflation target for some months now, the continuous rise in inflation rate opens up the possibility of the RBI scrutiny before its next monetary policy meeting.
The annual rate of inflation in food prices, which account for about half of the consumer price index (CPI), stood at 2.80 per cent in April 2018.
Consumer price inflation for the rural areas increased to 1.87 per cent in April 2019 from 1.80 per cent in March. It was 4.67 per cent in April 2018.
Consumer price inflation for the urban areas increased to 4.23 per cent in April 2019 from 4.10 per cent in March. It was 4.42 per cent in April 2018.
Food price inflation for rural areas was higher at (-) 0.80 per cent in April 2019 against (-) 1.46 per cent in March. It was 3.63 per cent in April 2018.
Food price inflation for urban areas rose to 4.64 per cent in April 2019 from 3.47 per cent in March. It was 1.29 per cent in April 2018.
