Consumer price inflation in the country, based on the consumer price index continued its upward push, rising to 5,52 per cent in March 2021 from 5.03 per cent in February on rising food and fuel prices, but still within the tolerance limit set by the Reserve Bank of India of 4+/- 2 per cent.
The rise in inflation may be attributed to a spike in oil prices that has driven up fuel prices in the country to unheard of levels.
Data released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) showed that consumer price inflation that hit a low of 3.15 per cent in July last year has started going up again after a brief lull, hitting a new high of 5.52 per cent in March.
Consumer price inflation for rural areas rose to 4.61 per cent in March 2021 from 4.19 per cent in February.
Consumer price inflation for urban areas rose to 6.52 in March 2021 from 5.96 per cent in February.
Food price inflation zoomed to 4.94 per cent in March 2021 from 3.87 per cent in February.
