Consumer price inflation in the country, based on the consumer price index, which hit the 6.30 mark in May declined slightly to levels around 6.26 per cent in Juke, still continuing above the 4+/- 2 per cent ceiling set by the Reserve Bank of India.
The spike in consumer price inflation has been due mainly to the skyrocketing of of the prices of edible oils and fuels and generally high prices of cereals and fruits and vegetables, data released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) showed.
Consumer price inflation for rural areas stood at 6.16 per cent in June 2021, down from 6.48 per cent in May.
Consumer price inflation for urban areas, on the other hand, rose further to 6.37 per cent in June from 6.04 per cent in May.
Food price inflation rate rose to 5.15 per cent in June 2021 from 4.52 per cent in May.
Food price inflation for rural areas rose to 5.02 per cent in June 2021 from 4.52 per cent in May.
Food price inflation for urban areas was lower at 5.42 per cent in June 2021 against 5.97 per cent in May.
The rising trajectory of commodity prices, especially staples like edible oil and pulses in the country and a surge in global crude prices along with rising logistics costs is having an impact on core prices.
