India saw the daily count of Covid-19 cases spike with 6,088 confirmed cases in the 24 hours ended 10 am today. The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases is the country now stands at 1,18,447.
India also saw an increase in total recovery rate to 40.98 per cent with a total of 48,533 people having been cured. In the last 24 hours, 3,234 patients were found cured.
The number of cases under active medical supervision is 66,330.
A release issued by the union health ministry said the centre and the state governments are taking a graded, pre-emptive and pro-active approach, for prevention, containment and management of Covid-19. These are being regularly reviewed and monitored at the highest level.
“As we transition through Lockdown 4.0, it is important to be mindful of making appropriate Covid behaviour an integral part of our lifestyle, which will essentially include regular hand washing and hand hygiene, usage of masks/face covers, physical distancing to maintain ‘2 gaz ki doori’, taking care of the old and most vulnerable to the disease, self-protection through boosting of immunity following ministry of AYUSH guidelines, installation of the Aarogya Setu app, and adopting a health seeking behaviour through timely reporting of symptoms and care seeking for Covid-19 treatment without attaching any stigma.
India is attempting to flatten the curve of the novel coronavirus and is currently under an extended lockdown, as some states are continuing to see a steady rise in cases. The Indian government has extended its lockdown till 31 May to help contain the spread of Covid-19.
As testing increased and with an influx of people from within and outside India, some states are witnessing a spike in incidence of Covid-19 and the number of deaths.
Experts say that India should be testing more than it currently does, and the number of cases detected is expected to go up as, states ramp up testing.
As per the last count, Tamil Nadu has 14,753 cases, of which 7,128 people have recovered and 98 people have died of the disease. On 22 May, 694 new cases were reported.
Karnataka has a total of 1,743 cases of which, 597 patients have recovered and the state has reported 41 deaths. A total of 138 new cases were reported in the state on Friday (22 May).
Kerala has a total of 733 cases, of which 512 have recovered while 5 have died. The state reported 42 new cases on Friday.
Andhra Pradesh has a total of 2,667 cases, with 1,756 recoveries and 55 deaths. The state reported 62 new cases on Friday.
Telangana has a total of 1,761 cases, with 1,046 recoveries and 48 deaths. The state saw an increase of 62 cases on Friday.
Maharashtra has a total of 44,582 cases, with 12,583 recoveries and 1,517 deaths. The state saw 2,940 new cases and 63 deaths on Friday.
Cases across the world are currently at 52,21,172 with 3,38,183 deaths (according to the map by Johns Hopkins) as on May 23.
