India’s foodgrains production set to hit record 264 mn tonnes in 2013-14

India is likely to produce a record 264.38 million tonnes of foodgrains during 2013-14 (includes kharif 2013 and rabi 2013-14 crops) compared to 257.13 million tonnes last year. This is more than 7 million tonnes higher than the production last year.

Releasing the third revised estimates of food production in the country, the agriculture ministry, said the upward revision from the February estimates of 263.2 million tonnes follow record rice production of 106.29 million tonnes expected during the kharif and rabi and wheat production of 95.85 million tonnes.

Record production has also been achieved in the case of tur (3.38 million tonne), gram (9.93 million tonnes), maize (24.19 million tonnes), all other pulses put together (19.57 million tonne), cotton (36.50 million bales) and jute (10.82 million bales).

The revised production takes into account kharif crops of the year 2013 and rabi crops of the year 2013-14. Good monsoon last year had helped the country in achieving this feat.
