India’s wholesale price inflation up at 2.38% in February

The annual rate of inflation based on the all-India Wholesale Price Index (WPI) stood at 2.38 per cent in February 2025, up from 2.31 per cent in January, due primarily to increase in prices of some manufactured food products and non-food products, textiles etc, provisional figures rteleased by the commerce ministry showed.
Inflation rate for the primary articles group, which has a weight of 22.62 per cent in the WPI Index, declined by 1.74 per cent in February 2025 as prices of food articles, crude petroleum and natural gas, minerals and non-food articles declined from levels in January.
Inflation rate for the fuel and power group (weight of 13.15 per cent in WPI), increased by 2.12 per cent in February 2025 due to rise in the prices of electricity and mineral oils. The price of coal remained unchanged from the previous month.
Inflation rate for the manufactured products group (weight of 64.23 per cent) increased by 0.42 per cent in February 2025 as 17 out of the 22 manufactured product groups showed increase in prices. Prices of two groups declined while prices of three groups remained unchanged.
Some of the important groups that showed increase in prices in Februart 2025 were manufactured goods, manufactured food products, basic metals and non-metallic mineral products, chemicals and chemical products etc.
Some of the groups that witnessed decline in prices in February 2025 were manufactured wood products and cork, leather and related products.
Food inflation based on the WPI Food Index (weight of 24.38 per cent), consisting of 'food articles' from primary articles group and 'food product' from manufactured products group, declined to 5.94 per cent in February 2025 against 7.74 per cent in January.
Final WPI inflation rate based on the revised Wholesale Price Index for all commodities (Base: 2011-12=100) for December 2024 stood at 2.57 per cent.
