Indirect tax collection up Rs2,000 crore at Rs246,000 crore in FY'10

Indirect tax income of the Government of India rose Rs2,000 crore above the revised target to around Rs2,46,000 crore in the last fiscal (2009-10), despite the tax concessions announced in the stimulus packages, official sources said.
Estimates of indirect tax collections were revised down to Rs2,44,000 crore, from Rs2,69,000 crore estimated at the time of the budget.
However, direct tax collections of the government during FY10 fell to Rs3,80,000 crore from the revised estimates of Rs3,87000 crore, revenue secretary Sunil Mitra said at a function in Kolkata.
The government had set a Rs3,70,000 crore target for direct tax collection in the 2009-10 budget, but later revised it to Rs3,87,000 crore.
Addressing members of the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce and Industry today, Mitra said these were only provisional figures.
He said, it is likely that direct tax collections would go up further when final figures come in.
