Industrial production expanded 4.3% in July

Industrial production in the country based on the index of industrial production (IIP) expanded 4.3 per cent in July 2019 compared to a 7 per cent growth recorded in July last year, as per quick estimates released by the ministry of statistics and programme implementation.

IIP with base 2011-12 for the month stood at 1.2 per cent in June and 4.6 per cent in May this year.
The cumulative growth for the April-July 2019 period was 3.3 per cent.
Production in the mining, manufacturing and electricity grew at of 4.9 per cent, 4.2 per cent and 4.8 per cent, respectively while these sectors recorded cumulative growth rates of 3.4 per cent, 2.8 per cent and 6.6 per cent, respectively, in the April-July period.
Thirteen out of the 23 industry groups in the manufacturing sector recorded growth during July 2019. The industry group ‘manufacture of food products’ showed the highest growth of 23.4 per cent, followed by ‘manufacture of basic metals’ 17.3 per cent and ‘Manufacture of wearing apparel’ 15.0 per cent.
On the other hand, the industry group ‘manufacture of paper and paper products’ has shown the highest negative growth of (-) 15.4 per cent, followed by ‘Manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers’ (-) 13.3 per cent and Printing and reproduction of recorded media’ (-) 10.9 per cent.
Primary goods production increased by 3.5 per cent in July while capital goods production registered a negative growth of (-) 7.1 per cent, intermediate goods production rose 13.9 per cent and the infrastructure/ construction goods production increased 2.1 per cent during the month.
Production of consumer durables and consumer non-durables reported growth rates of (-) 2.7 per cent and 8.3 per cent respectively.
