Inflation reverses trend, falls to 0.70 per cent

The annual rate of inflation based on the wholesale price index stood lower at 0.70 per cent (provisional) for the week ended 26 September 2009 against 0.83 per cent (provisional) for the previous week (ended 19 September 2009).

The inflation rate stood at 12.08 per cent during the corresponding week (ended 27 September 2008) of the previous year.

Build-up of inflation in the financial year so far was 6.30 per cent compared with 6.44 per cent in the corresponding period of the previous year. The 52-week average inflation for the week ended 26 September 2009 stood at 2.84 per cent.

The official wholesale price index for 'all commodities' (base: 1993-94 = 100) for the week under review declined 0.1 per cent to 243.0 (provisional) from 243.3 (provisional) for the previous week.

The index for the `primary articles' group rose 0.1 per cent to 276.8 (provisional) from 276.5 (provisional) for the previous week.

The index for the 'food articles' group declined 0.2 per cent to 281.7 (provisional) from 282.2 (provisional) for the previous week due to lower prices of poultry chicken (-3 per cent) and bajra, fruits and vegetables, condiments and spices and arhar (-1 per cent each). However, the prices of tea (2 per cent) and maize and eggs (1 per cent each) moved up.
