Normal life in Jammu and other nearby areas including Kathua and Udhampur were disrupted on Wednesday after lawyers went on a strike demanding a CBI probe into the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl.
Most parts of Jammu appeared deserted as schools, colleges, shops and offices remained closed. Public transport was also crippled because of the bandh. But the police claimed there was no violence and most parts of the city remained calm.
The Jammu High Court Bar Association called for the bandh to protest the crime and the targeting of minority Dogras. The lawyers took out a rally in various parts of Jammu and also called for the support of the public for their demands.
They claim that the officers handling the case do not have a good track record and are from Kashmir.
Many political parties including the Congress and the Panthers joined the agitation.
However, the local chamber of commerce was opposed to the strike call. According to a spokesperson of the chamber, the issues raised by the lawyers lacked justification as the matter was sub judice.
