Monsoon deficit is 3 per cent till 21 August 2010

Rainfall across the country during the current monsoon season till 21 August 2010 is marginally lower by 3 per cent at 625.2 mm compared to long period average (LPA) of 644.2 mm for the same period, a statement released by the ministry of earth science said yesterday.

It further stated that the country received 70 per cent of its seasonal quantum of rainfall of 892.1 mm till 21 August 2010.

However, despite the overall satisfactory position, the deficit scenario persists over the states of northeast India, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh and other states.

Adverse effect of dry weather on agricultural activities was observed in nine districts of south Bengal and several districts of Bihar and Jharkhand. Rice transplanting was severely affected in the region as also standing rice and maize crops.

The rainfall data for the period from 1 June to 21 August show 21-per cent deficit for the east and northeast regions while the monsoon rainfall in the southern peninsula as a whole was 12-per cent above normal. Northwest region received 4-per cent surplus rains while the central region showed no significant deviation.

Of the meteorological sub-divisions across the country, Jharkhand received 47-per cent less than normal rainfall followed by 37 per cent in eastern UP, 31 per cent in Gangetic West Bengal, 27 per cent in Assam and Meghalaya, 26 per cent in Bihar, and 21 per cent in western UP.
