Noida farmers end agitation over land acquisition
30 Jul 2011
A day after the government released the draft Land Acquisition Bill, the Kisan Sangharsh Samiti has decided to suspend its agitation against land acquisition for the urban infrastructure project for three months, till the bill gets passed.
The draft Land Acquisition Bill, released on Friday, seeks to enhance compensation for landowners, even as the government would cease buying land for private projects. The bill also aims at ensuring rehabilitation of those displaced.
Farmers from over 50 villages around Noida today called a 'mahapanchayat' to decide their next course of action on the land acquisition battle.
Hundreds of farmers in Noida and Greater Noida, under the banner of Kisan Sangharsh Samiti, have been agitating for enhanced compensation and rehabilitation benefits in return for their land acquired.
The farmers agitation had cast a shadow on construction work undertaken by private builders in the satellite township.
The Noida Authority, meanwhile, has agreed to give five per cent of developed land of the total acquired land to farmers. The existing land occupied by the farmers would be regularised.
