Pranab Mukherjee offers fresh boost to economy before he steps down
23 Jun 2012
The government, in consultation with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), will announce certain measures on Monday that would help improve market conditions, finance minister Pranab Mukherjee said today.
Mukherjee is expected to demit office on Monday or Tuesday after the Prime Minister returns to India on 24 June after the G-20 and Rio summits.
It is also not clear as to whether the RBI or the finance ministry would announce the proposed measures.
Mukherjee, however, said the Department of Economic Affairs under the finance ministry had on Friday consulted RBI governor D Subbarao, who is aboard, on the measures needed to be taken.
While the government and the RBI have already taken some measures, he said, the proposed measures would help improve market sentiment.
Mukherjee, the nominee of the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA), was expected to demit office on 24 June to file papers for the presidential elections.
