Consumer price inflation rises to 10.79 per cent in January
Consumer price inflation in the country continued to stay in double digits for a second month in January 2013, at 10.79 per cent, up from 10.56 per cent in December 2012 and 9.90 per cent in November 2012. It was 9.75 per cent in October 2012.
Retail inflation has been rising for four consecutive months, driven by high prices of vegetables, edible oil, cereals and protein-based foods.
Consumer price inflation for urban areas rose to 10.73 per cent in January from 10.42 per cent in the previous month while the CPI for rural population increased to 10.88 per cent during the month from 10.74 per cent in December.
The general indices - combined, rural and urban - stood at 126.3, 127.4 and 124.9, respectively, in January 2013.
Among the various constituents of the consumer price index, the vegetables basket recorded the highest increase of 26.11 per cent, data released by the central statistics office (CSO) showed.
