Indian Railways on Monday extended the use of demonetised Rs500 and Rs1,000 currency notes to purchase tickets and for on-board catering till 24 November.

The government had earlier allowed use of the old currency at government hospitals, railway ticketing, public transport, airline ticketing at airports, milk booths, crematoria / burial grounds and petrol pumps till 11 November which was extended to 14 November and has now been further extended to 24 November.

All concerned have been instructed to comply with the latest instruction, according to a senior railway ministry official.

However, the precautionary measures, like refund of cancelled tickets through ticket deposit receipts (TDR) and not in cash among others, would continue, he added.

The railways had announced it would stop giving refunds for cancellation of tickets in cash and instead issuing ticket deposit receipts (TDRs).

In case of refund amount of Rs10,000 or above, the Railways will only transfer the amount to the customer's bank account and the person concerned is required to furnish account details for receiving the amount while cancelling the ticket.
