Rural India spends less than half compared to urban households: survey

The average monthly per capita expenditure (MPCE) of urban households in the country stood at an estimated Rs2,401.68, which was 87.4 per cent higher than the per capita monthly expenditure of Rs1,281.45 for the rural households, official estimates showed.
The poorest 10 per cent of India's rural population had an average MPCE of Rs503.49 against Rs702.26 for the poorest 10 per cent of the urban population.
The top 10 per cent of the rural population, ranked by MPCE, had an average monthly expenditure of Rs3,459.77, about 6.9 times that of the bottom 10 per cent.
The top 10 per cent of the urban population had an average MPCE of Rs7,651.68, about 10.9 times that of the bottom 10 per cent, results of the National Sample Survey (NSS) 68th round showed.
In rural India, half of the population belonged to households with MPCE below Rs1,030 (median value) and nearly 40 per cent of the rural population had MPCE below Rs922.
About 60 per cent of rural population had MPCE below Rs1,162. About 10 per cent had MPCE above Rs2,054.
