An obviously distressed Supreme Court today said it could not remain calm after going through the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) second status report on money laundering activities of multi-billion tax evader Hasan Ali Khan.

"When we look at the (status) report, it is very difficult to remain calm and poised as to what was happening in the country,'' the bench of justices B B Sudarshan Reddy and SS Nijjar said.

"Let the people of this country know what is happening," the bench added.

The strong observation from the court came in the wake of the second status report submitted by the ED to it detailing its investigation into the Pune-based stud farm owner Hasan Ali and others.

The ED submitted the report in a sealed cover to the court.

As the hearing got underway, solicitor general Gopal Subramanium told the court that Hasan Ali had in a  written statement to the ED said that there was a danger to his life and that of his family.
