The United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) today signed a cease-fire agreement with the government, paving way for formal peace talks between government and the separatist group.

The union government, the government of Assam and the ULFA also signed a tripartite agreement for suspension of operations against ULFA.

Officials from the union home ministry and the state government of Assam signed the agreement with ULFA representatives Shashadhar Chaudhuri, Chitraban Hazarika and Raju Barua in New Delhi today.

The suspension of operations against ULFA follows ULFA's agreeing to abjure violence and find a solution to the problems as perceived by them through peaceful negotiations with the government of India and the state government of Assam.

The suspension of operation agreement will ensure that the outfit will not carry out any subversive activities till a political solution to the issue is arrived at while the security forces will also not take any action against the ULFA cadres.

The agreement will be in operation during the political talks and till a final agreement is arrived at.
