India meets climate action targets 7 years ahead of time; sets goals higher
19 Dec 2023
India has surpassed the UN mandated targets of reducing emissions intensity of its GDP by 33 to 35 per cent and bringing 40 per cent of all installed electricity generation capacity under non-fossil fuel sources by 2030, minister of state for environment, forest and climate change Ashwini Kumar Choubey informed the Lok Sabha in a written reply on Monday.
These two targets have been achieved 7 years ahead of the target year, according to the minister.
As of 31 October 2023, India’s cumulative installed electric power generating capacity from non-fossil fuel sources stood at 186.46 MW, which is 43.81 per cent of the country’s installed power capacity.
In its third national communication to the UNFCCC in December 2023, India had stated that the emission intensity of its GDP has been reduced by 33 per cent between 2005 and 2019.
India is now aiming at an enhanced target of reducing emission intensity of its GDP to 45 per cent of the 2005 level by 2030.
India has also enhanced the cumulative electric power installed capacity target from non-fossil fuel-based energy resources to 50 per4 cent by 2030.
India is a party to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and its Paris Agreement and it is obligatory for parties to set individual targets, ie, Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC).
