DMK asks UPA to review decision on retail FDI; seek SC review of 2G order

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), the second largest partner in the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) at the centre, today demanded reconsideration of the government's decision to allow foreign direct investment (FDI) in the multi-brand retail sector and said it was with the opposition on the issue.

DMK, which was at the receiving end of the 2G spectrum allocation scam that led to the Supreme Court canceling all the 122 telecom licences issued in 2008, also asked the government to move a review petition on the cancellation of the 122 telecom licences.

An emergency meeting of the party's executive body chaired by party chief M Karunanidhi also decided to back any opposition-sponsored resolution that may be brought on the FDI issue.

''Allowing FDI in multi-brand retail in the name of economic reforms will spell doom for developing countries like India,'' the resolution said.

DMK, which has 18 Lok Sabha members and is currently the second-largest alliance partner at the centre after the Congress Party, opposes the centre's decision to lead the FDI policy with select states.

The resolution said some states going ahead with the implementation of FDI and some others opposing it will pit one state against the other and only bring huge damage to the Indian economy.
