The government on Sunday announced that the deadline for the linking of Aadhaar with their Permanent Account Numbers (PAN) has been extended to 30 September 2019. Those looking to file their income tax returns on or after 1 April 2019 will still have to quote their PAN while doing so.
The Income Tax (IT) Department has made it mandatory for taxpayers to link their PAN with Aadhaar card in order to file Income Tax returns (ITR) for the assessment year 2019-20.
The deadline to link the permanent account number (PAN) with Aadhaar - the unique biometric identification number - ended on 31 March 2019.
"It has been reported in some sections of the media that those PANs which are not linked with Aadhaar number by March 31, 2019 may be invalidated," the government said in a statement. "The matter has been considered by the central government and now the cut-off date for intimating the Aadhaar number and linking PAN with Aadhaar is September 30, 2019 unless specifically exempted."
The statement added that the Aadhaar number should be quoted while filing income tax returns from 1 April onwards.
"Notwithstanding the last date of intimating/linking of Aadhaar Number with PAN being 30 September 2019, it is also made clear that with effect from 01 April 2019, it is mandatory to quote and link Aadhaar number while filing the return of income, unless specifically exempted,” the government said.
This is the sixth time the government has extended the Aadhaar-PAN linking deadline.
The department has on its website –
incometaxindia.gov.in – listed various ways for the income tax assessees to link their Aadhaar with PAN. Some of these facilities are e-filing income tax portal and through ITR and SMS service.
The Aadhaar card number can be linked with a PAN card number online through the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal:
incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in. For this, the user is required to click on the ‘link Aadhaar’ option on the portal’s homepage to proceed. On the following page, the user can submit a request to link the two personal identification numbers by entering details such as full name along with PAN and Aadhaar.
The Income Tax department has also provided the option of SMS for linking the two. The user is required to send an SMS to 567678 or 56161 in the following format: UIDPAN<12-digit Aadhaar><10-digit PAN>.
A request to link Aadhaar number with PAN can also be registered in the application to obtain a PAN card or apply for any changes in one’s information on the PAN card.
An individual can also submit a request to link Aadhaar number with PAN while filing the income tax return (ITR) online (e-filing). The link of e-filing is available on the websites of NSDL -
tin-nsdl.com and UTIITSL -
utiitsl.com, as well as the income tax e-filing portal.
