Houses adjourned yet again amid FDI ruckus

No end is in sight to the logjam as the opposition is adamant in its stand against foreign capital in retail, while the ruling coalition is unwilling to put the matter to a vote.

Both houses of Parliament were adjourned almost as soon as they convened today, as opposition members continued their ruckus over the government's decision to allow foreign direct investment in multi-brand retail.

Today's adjournment means that Parliament has been unable to transact any business in the seven days since the winter session began – and there is no sign yet of the logjam ending anytime soon.

In the Lok Sabha, no sooner had speaker Meira Kumar called Question Hour to begin the day's proceedings than opposition MPs rushed vociferously into the aisles and the well, demanding a reversal of the FDI decision.

Among the agitating members were those of the Trinamool Congress, a key partner in the UPA government. Members of another partner, the Telugu Desam Party, also joined the protests.
