First Capesize vessel berths at Dhamra Port

Bhubaneswar: Dhamra Port, having become commercially operational only in May this year, has received its first Capesize vessel with the arrival of a Chinese ship from Australia. The ship, ''China Steel Responsibility'', is carrying around 1.5 lakh tonnes of coal for Tata Steel.
The 180,000 DWT ship arrived Sunday evening. At 290 metres, the vessel is the largest to berth in Orissa or neighbouring West Bengal.
Dhamra port in the coastal district of Bhadrak, about 170 km from here, is a 50:50 joint-venture between Larsen and Toubro (L&T) and Tata Steel.
Dhamra port has two berths of 350 metre each and currently is geared to handle 25 MTPA (million tonnes per annum) of cargo.
The 18 km channel of the port has a depth of 18 meters, which can handle vessels up to 180,000 DWT.
The first cargo ship had berthed at Dhamra port 18 September last year, carrying around 23,000 tonnes of coal from Australia.
